U.S.–Nigeria Intelligence Sharing Leads to Airstrikes on Islamic State Camps in Northwest Nigeria

U.S.–Nigeria Intelligence Sharing Leads: The United States and Nigeria carried out coordinated airstrikes against Islamic State-linked camps in Sokoto State after intelligence sharing, Nigerian officials said, marking a significant counterterrorism operation in northwest Nigeria.

The United States and Nigeria conducted coordinated airstrikes against Islamic State-linked militant camps in northwest Nigeria, Nigerian officials confirmed on Saturday, following intelligence cooperation between the two countries.

The strikes, which took place between December 25 and December 26, targeted two militant camps in the Bauni forest area of Sokoto State, close to Nigeria’s border with Niger. Authorities said the operation was approved by President Bola Tinubu and carried out at the request of the Nigerian government, with the United States providing technical and intelligence support.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, said the strikes were based on actionable intelligence shared by Nigerian security agencies and coordinated with U.S. counterparts. He stressed that the operation was conducted with Nigeria’s consent and in line with international law.

“The Nigerian government requested support after identifying foreign-linked extremist elements operating in the area,” Tuggar said. “The intelligence was verified and acted upon to neutralise the threat.”

According to Nigerian officials and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), the camps were linked to Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), a faction believed to be attempting to expand operations into northwest Nigeria. The region has witnessed increasing violence in recent years, including attacks by armed groups involved in kidnapping, banditry, and extremist activities.

Details of the Operation

Military sources said the strikes involved precision-guided munitions, including drone-based attacks, aimed at minimising civilian harm. While exact casualty figures were not immediately disclosed, officials said several militant operatives were killed.

Nigerian authorities reported no confirmed civilian casualties, though residents in nearby villages said they heard loud explosions during the night. Security forces were later deployed to assess the impact and maintain order in the surrounding areas.

The Nigerian government reiterated that sovereignty was respected throughout the operation and that foreign military action took place only with Abuja’s approval.

U.S.–Nigeria Intelligence Sharing Leads: Growing Security Challenge in Northwest Nigeria

Unlike Nigeria’s northeast, which has long battled Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), northwest Nigeria has emerged as a new front for insecurity. Armed groups operating in the region often exploit vast forest reserves and porous borders with Niger to evade security forces.

Security analysts say extremist factions have increasingly sought alliances with local armed groups, raising concerns about the spread of transnational terrorism into previously affected areas.

“The northwest is becoming strategically important for extremist groups due to weak state presence and cross-border movement,” a regional security analyst said. “International cooperation is now seen as essential to addressing the threat.”

International and Political Reactions

In the United States, the operation was presented as part of Washington’s broader counterterrorism efforts in Africa. U.S. officials said the strikes reflected ongoing commitments to support partner nations facing extremist threats.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, in a social media post, praised the operation and described it as a strong response against terrorism. His remarks, however, drew mixed reactions, with some observers cautioning against politicising counterterrorism actions.

Human rights groups have urged transparency, calling on authorities to release detailed assessments of the strikes and ensure accountability if civilian harm is identified.

Regional Implications

The operation highlights growing U.S.–Nigeria security cooperation at a time when West Africa is facing rising instability. Militancy in the Sahel and neighbouring regions has displaced millions and strained already fragile governments.

Analysts say intelligence-led operations, combined with long-term development and governance reforms, will be critical to preventing extremist groups from regrouping.

“Nigeria cannot rely solely on military action,” said a security expert based in Abuja. “Sustainable peace will require addressing poverty, governance gaps, and community grievances.”

U.S.–Nigeria Intelligence Sharing Leads: Conclusion

The U.S.–Nigeria joint airstrikes mark a significant development in Nigeria’s fight against extremism in the northwest. While officials say the operation successfully targeted Islamic State-linked camps, authorities acknowledge that long-term stability will depend on continued intelligence cooperation and broader security reforms.

Investigations and security assessments in the affected areas are ongoing.
