Unraveling the Mystery of Shankaracharya: Who is Shankaracharya?
According to religious beliefs, Adi Shankaracharya started the monasteries. He was a Hindu philosopher and religious leader, also known as Jagadguru, who wanted to protect and spread Sanatana Dharma.
For this, he gave the responsibility of the monasteries established in four directions of the country to his four main disciples.
The head of these monasteries is called Shankaracharya. Shankaracharya is considered supreme in Sanatan Dharma.
What are Mathhs/Peethas?
According to Sanatan Dharma, in the Mathh, the Guru imparts the education and knowledge of Sanatan Dharma to his disciples. This is spiritual education.
However, along with this, monasteries also give knowledge about some important aspects of life, social service, literature, etc. Mathh is a word that has multi-religious meanings.
The four major monasteries in the country are Dwarka, Jyotish, Govardhan, and Shringeri Peeth. Actually, in Sanskrit, monasteries are called Peethas.
How is Shankaracharya selected?
A person needs to hold the post of Shankaracharya to know Tyagi, Dandi Sanyasi, Sanskrit, Chaturvedi, Vedanta Brahmin, Brahmachari, and Puranas.
Along with this, they are considered very important in their household life, Mundan, Pind Daan, and Rudraksha.
To become Shankaracharya, it is mandatory to be a Brahmin, who should be knowledgeable of all four Vedas and six Vedangas.
Those who are made Shankaracharya need the consent of the heads of the Akharas, Acharya Mahamandaleshwars, the assembly of eminent saints, and also the seal of approval of the Kashi Vidvat Parishad.
Only after this one gets the title of Shankaracharya.
Who and which monastery is the chief Shankaracharya of the country?
Govardhan Mathh.
Govardhan Mathh is established in the Puri state of Odisha. The name ‘Aranya’ sect is applied after the names of the monks of Govardhan Math. Nischalanand Saraswati is the Shankaracharya of this monastery.
‘Rigveda’ has been kept under this monastery. The first abbot of Govardhan Math was Padmapada Acharya, the first disciple of Adi Shankaracharya.
Sharda Mathh.
Sharda Math Sharda Math is situated in Dwarkadham, Gujarat. Sadanand Saraswati is the Shankaracharya of Sharda Mathh.
Tirtha or Ashram is named after the name of the monks of this monastery. ‘Samveda’ has been kept under this monastery. The first abbot of Sharda Math was Hastamalaka (Prithvidhar).
Jyotir Mathh.
Jyotir Mathh is situated in Badrikashram of Uttarakhand. Swami Avimukteshwarananda is the Shankaracharya of this monastery.
Sagar is used after the names of the saints of Jyortimath. Atharvaveda is kept under this monastery. The first abbot of this monastery was Trotkacharya.
Shringeri Mathh.
Shringeri MatHh is established in Rameshwaram, South India. Saraswati or Bharati is used behind the names of the monks of this monastery.
Jagadguru Bharati Tirtha is the Shankaracharya of this monastery.
Yajurveda has been kept under this monastery. Let us tell you that the first abbot of the monastery was Acharya Sureshwaracharya.
