US journalist arrested in Myanmar was also charged with treason and terrorism.

An American journalist detained for months by Myanmar’s junta military regime has been charged with terrorism and treason.

The journalist’s lawyer informed the news agency on Wednesday and said that if found guilty, he could face up to life imprisonment.

Daniel Fenster, who was arrested while leaving the country in May, was charged with “two charges under section 50(a) of the Anti-Terrorism Act and section 124(a) of the Penal Code”.

Conviction under the Anti-Terrorism Act carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Fenster, 37, was detained on charges of inciting unrest against the country’s coup regime against the military and also faces charges of violating immigration law.

The new charges come days after former US diplomat and hostage negotiator Bill Richardson met with junta chief Min Aung Huling in the capital, Napita.

Fenster is believed to have contracted COVID-19 while under house arrest, family members said during a conference call with American journalists in August.
