US Open Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal gets US Open main draw. India’s young tennis player Sumit Nagal got a direct entry to the main draw in singles as several top players withdrew from the Grand Slam starting on 31 August. World No. 127 player Nagal is the last player to enter.
Sumit Nagal is the only Indian player while Prajnesh Gunneswaran missed the 132nd position. Last year, Nagal won a set against Roger Federer while playing here for the first time. He, however, lost 6-4, 1-6, 2-6, 4-6. Sumit said, ‘It was good to enter the main draw of Grand Slam again. I have played only once so far, but understand that the situation is not the same this year.
I will go to America to play the Challenger tournament in the Czech Republic. I do not have many expectations. I just want to enjoy my game. We can only go to court from the hotel. Also, there will be a corona check every other day.
Reduction in prize money:
The prize money of the US Open singles winners has been cut. The singles winners will get a meager amount of US $ 850000 (about six crores 36 lakh rupees) this time. The total amount of the US Open last year was $ 57 million (about Rs. 426 crores), which has now come down to $ 53.4 million (about Rs. 400 crores).
However, the amount of the first-round winners was increased by five percent from $ 58000 (about Rs 43 lakh) to $ 61000 (about Rs 45 lakh). The singles winners received US $ 3.85 million (about Rs 29 crore) last year, which has now come down to the US $ 3 million (about Rs 23 crore).
The runners-up went from US $ 1.9 million (around Rs 14 crore) to US $ 1.5 million (around Rs 11 crore). Apart from this, there is a cut in the amount of those who reached the semi-finals and quarter-finals. Apart from this, the players will be given a relief of $ 6.6 million (about Rs 50 crore) due to the decline in their earnings due to Covid-19.
