Violent mob attacked the UN peacekeeping force in Congo, and 2 BSF personnel were killed: UN Peacekeeping Mission.

Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on a UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR) succumbed to fatal injuries on Tuesday during a violent demonstration.

A senior BSF official said that they were in touch with the authorities and reinforcements of the United Nations force (army component) while on their way to the spot.

Earlier, some groups had called for a week-long movement across DR Congo. The situation turned violent in Goma (about 350 km south of Beni and a large Monasco base) with looting and arson.

Both Beni and Butembo, where 2 BSF platoons were deployed, were on high alert. However, the situation in Butembo turned violent on Tuesday.

The Morocco Rapid Deployment Camp where the BSF platoon was stationed was surrounded by protesters.

The violent mob attacked the UN peacekeeping force in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Two seriously injured BSF jawans were killed.

Congolese Police (PNC) and Congolese Army (FARDC) troops arrived, but could not control the violent crowd estimated at over 500.

To control the situation, Congolese troops opened fire in the air and BSF personnel fired fumes to disperse the crowd. Moroccan and Indian troops opened fire in self-defense.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar tweeted, “Deeply saddened at the loss of life of two brave Indian peacekeepers of BSF in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

They were part of MONUSCO. The perpetrators of these outrageous attacks must be held accountable and brought to justice.

The United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, known as MONUSCO, is one of the largest peacekeeping missions in the world.
