Will Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi Return
Will Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi finally return to India? A UK prosecution team inspects Tihar Jail ahead of extradition decisions. Read about India’s assurance, pending cases, and the fate of Vijay Mallya.
New Delhi: In a major development on the extradition front, a high-level team from Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) recently visited Delhi’s Tihar Jail to review the security and living conditions for fugitive economic offenders like Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.
The CPS team inspected the high-security ward and interacted with inmates to assess whether high-profile fugitives can be safely accommodated if extradited. Indian officials assured the delegation that a special enclave could be established within Tihar Jail to provide adequate security and meet international standards.
The Government of India has guaranteed that no accused will face illegal interrogation or unsafe treatment. British courts have previously blocked extradition requests, citing concerns about the state of Indian prisons. To address this, the Indian side emphasized its commitment to ensuring proper facilities for economic offenders and other high-profile criminals.
At present, India has 178 extradition requests pending worldwide, with nearly 20 cases in the UK. These include not only financial fraudsters but also arms dealers and individuals linked to Khalistani networks. In July 2025, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reiterated India’s determination to bring fugitives back to face justice.
The spotlight remains on Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.
• Vijay Mallya, currently in London, faces charges of defaulting on loans exceeding ₹9,000 crore from Indian banks.
• Nirav Modi, the prime accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, has been lodged in a UK prison since 2019 after being declared a Fugitive Economic Offender by India. His properties, worth crores, have been seized by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the UK courts have already approved his extradition to India.

The UK team’s inspection of Tihar Jail marks a crucial step toward the possible extradition of Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, and other economic offenders. If assurances hold, India may soon witness the return of some of the most wanted fugitives who have evaded justice for years.
