After raping a woman in Mumbai, a case of cruelty has come to the fore. The police are investigating the matter.

A 34-year-old woman, said to be in critical condition, was brutally assaulted after she was raped in a roadside tempo in suburban Sakinaka on Friday.

According to the police, the accused Mohan Chauhan (45) was arrested within hours of the incident.

Police said that in the early hours of Friday, the police control room received a call that a man was beating up a woman on Khairani Road.

The police team reached the spot to find a woman covered in blood. He was taken to the civilian-run Rajawadi Hospital, the official said.

Police said the incident took place inside a tempo parked on the side of the road. Bloodstains have been found inside the vehicle.

According to the doctors, the condition of the woman is critical, the official said.

Acting on some leads, the accused Chauhan was arrested under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 376 (rape) of the IPC, and further investigation is on, he said.

It is worth noting that in December 2012, a girl Nirbhaya was brutally assaulted after being raped in a moving bus in Delhi, which caused outrage across the country.

After struggling for life for several days, she died in the hospital.

Earlier in June 2019, a 25-year-old flight attendant working in a private Mumbai-based airline was allegedly gang-raped by her friend and her flat occupants in Andheri suburban area.

In this case, the woman’s friend Swapnil Badodia has been taken into custody by the police. Badodia confessed to the crime but denied the involvement of his roommate.
