A 49-year-old Dispute Between Denmark And Canada Ends

A 49-year-old dispute between Denmark and Canada ends- The Danish-Canadian deal.

49-year-old dispute over a 1.3 sq km island between Canada and Denmark ends.

A 49-year-old dispute between Denmark and Canada over a barren and unpopulated rocky island in the Arctic has ended. Both the countries have agreed to divide this small island.

According to the agreement, a boundary line will be drawn on this 1.3 square kilometer Hans island.

The island is located on the sea route between the northwest coast of Greenland, the semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, and Ellesmere Island in Canada.

There are no deposits of minerals on the island of Haines.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod said: “This is a clear indication that it is possible to resolve border disputes in a practical and peaceful manner in which all parties are victorious.”

He said that this is an important sign in the midst of war and unrest in the world.

Canada and Denmark agreed in 1973 to create a border between Greenland and Canada through the Strait of Nares.

But they did not agree on which country would have sovereignty over Hans Island, which lies about 1,100 kilometers (680 mi) south of the North Pole.

In the end, later decided to work on the question of ownership.

In subsequent years, the territorial dispute – nicknamed the ‘Whiskey War’ by the media – was raised several times.

The agreement comes into force after the completion of the internal procedures of both countries. In Denmark, the parliament must first give its assent to the agreement.

Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, said – ‘This is a victory for Canada. It is a victory for Denmark.’

‘We’re showing other countries how to resolve territorial disputes, What we’re saying to President Putin is, ‘We have the best way to settle disputes.’

The two foreign ministers also exchanged whiskey bottles.

Although both countries sent warships to the island, there was never any threat of a shooting war. Both sides resolved to resolve the problem peacefully and the talks started in 2005.

The agreement means that the United States will no longer be the only country with which Canada shares a land border.

Jolie said ‘we now have a border with the European Union.’ Can shorten travel from Europe to the Far East. The United States, Canada, Russia, Denmark, and Norway have been making claims in the Arctic.
