In a rare development, the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission has ordered the Director-General of Police to keep state minister P. Ramachandra Reddy ‘under house arrest’ till February 21.

Meaning, ministers will not be able to move out of their residential premises. This action has been taken by the Minister in the matter of making alleged remarks against the Commission.

Panchayat elections are to be held in four phases from February 9 to 21 in the state.

State Election Commissioner Ramesh Kumar has said in his order that the commission, after considering various alternative measures.

EC Directs the Director-General of Police to exercise the powers under Article 243 (k) of the Constitution to direct the Minister of Panchayati Raj and Rural Development to be in his residential premises Till the completion of the election of the gram panchayats (21 February).

However, the Commission has clarified that this order banning going out of the house will not be applicable to medical needs or situations for which it is unavoidable to leave the house.

But during that time they will not be able to talk to the media or their supporters. Also, as a minister, they will be able to fulfill their legitimate obligations.

Accused of threatening officers

The order states that these restrictions have been imposed as a precautionary measure so that voters can cast their votes freely while being unaffected by any threat or threat.

According to the commission, the minister had in a press conference on Thursday threatened the collectors and election officials that they should not follow the instructions of the ‘cynical election commissioner’.

Officers will be blacklisted

According to the commission, the minister had also said that if the officers did so (forcibly preventing uncontested elections), then those officers would be blacklisted after the elections were completed.

Reddy also reportedly said that State Election Commissioner Ramesh Kumar has his own political motives and is favoring the opposition Telugu Desam in his desire to become an MP or Legislative Councilor in the future.

Threatened again

In his response to the commission’s order, Reddy has said that he has seen the news on TV channels and if the Director-General of Police has to implement the commission’s order, he can do so.

He said, ‘I am not opposing it, just saying that the State Election Commission has given this kind of restrictive order in connivance with Telugu Desam Party supremo Chandrababu Naidu, which shows that the Commission has gone mad. . People will definitely teach him a lesson for this.
