Assam Police Station Attack: Main accused of setting fire to the police station was killed, and tried to escape from police custody.
The prime accused, who set a police station on fire after a mob incited violence in Assam’s Nagaon district, died in an accident on Monday morning, allegedly while trying to escape from police custody.
Officials gave this information. He said that the escort vehicle of the police team the accused Aashikul Islam was accompanying hit him as he tried to escape.
Nagaon Superintendent of Police Leena Dole told reporters that the accused was taken to the Nagaon Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Five policemen, including a sub-inspector, suffered minor injuries, he said.
Assam Police Station Attack: Islam was arrested on Sunday.
Islam was arrested on Sunday. Based on his interrogation, a team of policemen took him to his house in Juria to recover arms and ammunition.
Dole said police recovered seven rounds of ammunition along with two pistols and a red T-shirt from his house.
Islam was seen wearing this T-shirt in a video while inciting a mob to set fire to the Batadrava police station on May 21.
11 people arrested so far.
So far, 11 people, including Islam, have been arrested in connection with the incident that followed the death of a fish vendor in police custody.
The police had claimed that the fish seller Safikul Islam had died because he was unwell. But his family members alleged that the police had demanded Rs 10,000 and a duck release him.
Police razed the houses of the accused.
The family members also claimed that they were ready to give a duck, but they did not have the money, so the police beat up Safikul Islam, leading to his death.
After this, an angry mob stormed the police station and set it on fire.
On May 22, the authorities demolished the houses of those allegedly involved in the incident, including a fish seller, saying they were encroachers who had settled on government land.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the entire matter.
At least 48 people have been killed and 116 injured in the police crackdown on those trying to escape from custody or attack law enforcers since the BJP government came to power in May last year.
