Foreign Minister Jaishankar Criticizes the United Nations
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar compared the United Nations to an old company losing relevance in today’s world. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, he emphasized the need for reform and expansion of the UN, highlighting its inability to address key global issues like COVID-19, Ukraine, and the Middle East conflicts.
Foreign Minister Jaishankar gave a piece of his mind to the United Nations, said – it is like an old company, also told the future in gestures. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar indirectly took a dig at the United Nations. He described the United Nations as an old company and also said that it is no longer relevant today. At the Kautilya Economic Conclave on Sunday, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said that the United Nations is like an old company, which is unable to keep pace with the market. But it has occupied space.
The Foreign Minister said that despite being less in functioning, you have the United Nations today. But when this institution does not come forward on major issues, countries find their ways. India has always advocated the reform of multilateral institutions. This also includes the expansion of the United Nations Security Council.
Foreign Minister Jaishankar further said that although the United Nations still exists. But it is no longer the only way for countries to cooperate on global problems. He said that in the last 5-10 years, perhaps the biggest event in our lives was COVID. Think about what the UN did in COVID. I think the answer is not much. During this time, countries worked in their way like initiatives like COVAX. It was created by a group of countries. The COVAX initiative was prepared outside the framework of the United Nations.
The Foreign Minister said that where is the United Nations in the two conflicts going on in Ukraine and the Middle East? It has essentially become a mute spectator. This organization becomes largely inactive when it comes to dealing with important geopolitical crises. The United Nations will continue. But increasingly a non-UN space is being created, which is an active space. This shows that countries are forming coalitions outside the United Nations.
