Ahmedabad Sessions Court refuses to grant bail to Teesta Setalvad and Sreekumar, arrested in connection with the Gujarat riots.
In the 2002 Gujarat riots case, social activist Teesta Setalvad and former Gujarat DGP RB Sreekumar appeared in a sessions court in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
Gujarat court rejects the bail application: After hearing the case, the court refused to grant bail to both the accused.
Teesta Setalvad and RB Sreekumar were arrested recently for tampering with evidence related to the 2002 riots in Gujarat to implicate innocents.
The court, while hearing the matter on Friday, deferred the decision for today. After which the court has now refused to grant bail to both the accused.
During the hearing on Friday in the court of Additional Chief Justice DD Thakkar, it was fixed for Saturday, postponing the pronouncement of the verdict for another day.
Earlier on Thursday also the decision was postponed. On Friday also, the judge said that the decision has not been ready yet.
Significantly, the court had last week reserved its order after hearing the arguments of Setalvad, Sreekumar, and the prosecution lawyers.
Setalvad and Sreekumar were arrested last month by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 468 (forgery with intent to cheat) and 194 (granting or fabricating false evidence with intent to obtain money).
However, both Setalvad and Sreekumar have denied the allegations leveled against them.
The government has constituted an SIT to investigate the matter. Besides Setalvad and Sreekumar, former IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt has also been made accused of the case.
They have also been arrested, the three have been arrested by the Crime Branch under sections 468 (making forged papers), and 194 (giving or making false evidence to avoid punishment) of the IPC.
