Why Martyr’s Day is celebrated
In 1675 Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed his life to protect religion, human values, ideals, and principles. This day is celebrated every year as Martyr’s Day and his sacrifice are remembered.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh Ji was born in Amritsar, Punjab. His childhood name was Tyagmal.
Guru Tegh Bahadur’s father was Guru Hargobind Singh. He was religious, fearless, considerate, and kind since childhood.
The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb issued a decree to kill him for refusing to convert to Islam.
In 1675, Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed himself to protect religion.
The Gurdwara Sheesh Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib of Delhi are the site of their supreme sacrifice.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh Ji sacrificed his life for the religious freedom of Kashmiri Hindus and non-Muslim community.
The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb was forced to forcibly convert all those people to Islam.
According to the Nanakshahi calendar, 24 November is remembered every year as the martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
Tegh Bahadur means the power of the sword. Guru Hargobind Ji named the boy Tyagamal Tegh Bahadur. Impressed by Tyagmal’s valor in the fight against the Mughals, he got this name.
In August 1664 Tegh Bahadur Ji was made the 9th Guru of the Sikhs. He was raised in the Sikh culture.
He had mastered archery and horse riding. Apart from Sikh texts, he also had knowledge of Vedas, Puranas, and Upanishads.

President Ramnath Kovind has paid tribute to Guru Tegh Bahadur on Martyrdom Day. He tweeted, ‘Guru Tegh Bahadur made a big sacrifice for the faith of truth and the rights of the people.
That is why his followers call him Hind and Chadar out of love and respect. ‘ The President said that the sacrifices made by him for the true service of humanity inspire us.
He said that the education and work of Guru Tegh Bahadur will always spread love and patriotism among all of us.
