ITLF apologizes to the Kuki-Jo community
ITLF apologizes to the Kuki-Jo community for misleading and clashing with the Meitei people: Manipur Violence.
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) on Wednesday apologized to the Kuki-Jo people for “misleading and causing conflict to the Meitei people” in the state.
In an official statement, the ITLF said the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum, a leading organization committed to the prosperity and unity of indigenous communities, has recognized and deeply regrets the mistake.
Innocent Kuki people were brainwashed and involved in an unfortunate conflict with the Meitei people.
The organization went on to say it believes its mission is to promote harmony, mutual respect, peace, and coexistence among the diverse indigenous communities.
“With a heavy heart, we acknowledge our failure to live up to these core principles has led to unintended consequences, affecting both the Kuki-Jo and Meitei communities,” the statement said.
ITLF apologizes to the Kuki-Jo community: Apologizing it said we sincerely apologize to those innocent cookie-cutter people whose trust was misplaced and who unwittingly got involved in the conflict.
ITLF also said it pledges to rectify the situation by taking action that includes open dialogue between the two communities, restorative measures, and a transparent review of its organizational processes and decision-making structures.
Violence broke out in Manipur between Hindu Meiteis and tribal Kukis, who are Christians, following a rally by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on 3 May.
Violence had spread across the state for more than a month and the central government had to deploy paramilitary forces to bring the situation under control.
Violence broke out in Manipur following a request to include the Meitei community on the Scheduled Tribal (ST) list.
The Meitei community is the majority community. They live in the Imphal Valley and its surroundings. Due to the increasing population, the demand for land has increased.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected an application by the Manipur Tribal Forum to protect the Kuki-Jo tribe from Indian troops.
