After this, its deadline kept increasing from time to time.

Violent clashes took place in the state on May 3.

‘Tribal solidarity marches’ were organized in the hill districts on 3 May to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

It was only after this that violence broke out in the state for the first time.

So far more than 100 people have died in this violence and many people have been injured. Apart from this, thousands of people have taken shelter in relief camps.

The Meiteis constitute about 53 percent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley
