Jaishankar On UN-Inclusive Indo-Pacific- Action Against Terror

Jaishankar on UN-inclusive Indo-Pacific – will take concrete action against terror.

India told the UN Security Council on Monday that the basis of its vision as an independent, free and inclusive region of the Indo-Pacific is the quest for ASEAN centrality and prosperity.

Along with this, India called for coordinated and concerted action across the border to counter the contemporary security challenges of terrorism, extremism, and organized crime.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “We understand that cooperation between the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organizations will be an important factor in successfully resolving contemporary challenges and conflicts.”

Addressing the open debate on the topic of ‘Enhancing cooperation between organizations’, he said that a rational assessment of cooperation between the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organizations during the last 75 years ‘will provide a good basis for our future dialogues’. ‘

India has close and friendly relations with regional organizations.

Jaishankar said that India has traditionally maintained close and friendly cooperation with regional organizations and India’s relationship with ASEAN is the foundation of its foreign policy and its ‘Act East policy.

He said that India’s vision of the Indo-Pacific as an independent, open, and inclusive region is based on ASEAN centrality and a common quest for progress and prosperity.

Jaishankar expressed India’s commitment to furthering regional cooperation under the ‘BIMSTEC’ framework and making the organization stronger, dynamic, and more effective as well as result-oriented.

Jaishankar said that the nature of the threats faced by the member nations has changed compared to the time of the founding of the United Nations 75 years ago.

He said that contemporary security challenges are not limited to regional or political disputes, but they cross physical or political boundaries.

He said that in today’s global world, terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, and organized crime are a growing trend. The security implications of new technologies cannot be ignored.

Referring to India’s centuries-old relationship with Africa, Jaishankar said, “We have had close ties with the African Union, especially for the development partnership initiative.”
