In this regard, officials said on Wednesday that searches were conducted for two days at several places in the Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar, Baramulla, and Anantnag. Police said that these include cases registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) related to banned organizations, including Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference (Bhat Group), Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League (Masrat Alam Group), and Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (Shabbir Shah Group).

Officials said that raids were conducted at two residences of Bhat, one in Baramulla and the other in Wazir Bagh in Srinagar. Bhat is the head of the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference (Bhat Group), a constituent of the Hurriyat Conference. He said that raids were also conducted at the house of Democratic Freedom Party chief Shabir Ahmed Shah.

According to the official statement, other leaders whose houses were raided include Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chief Masrat Alam Bhat, Ghulam Nabi Sumbiji, Mushtaq Ahmed Bhat (alias Gugga), Ghulam Nabi Wage, Feroz Ahmed Khan and Mohammad Nazir Khan, Hakim Abdul Rashid, and Javed Ahmed Munshi (alias Bilpapa). Officials said that the raids were conducted in connection with suspected members of these banned organizations and to further the investigation in various cases.

Hurriyat leaders leave DPM

On the other hand, Mohammad Shafi Reshi, a close aide of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who was the main face of pro-Pakistan politics in Kashmir, has distanced himself from Hurriyat and his organization, Democratic Political Movement (DPM).

JKPM leader Shahid Salim has also announced breaking ties with Hurriyat. Another group, the Jammu-based J&K Freedom Movement headed by Mohammad Sharif Sartaj, also ended its long association with the separatist alliance.

Former president of the Democratic Political Movement Mohammad Shafi Reshi said that the reality of Hurriyat had been understood. They did not have and do not have a roadmap. Their ideology is not their own, it has been handed over by the neighbouring country. Hurriyat has not been able to express the feelings and aspirations of the common Kashmiri properly anywhere.

At the same time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Modi government’s policies of unity have completely ended separatism from Jammu and Kashmir.
