Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby announced that the US Department of Defense would send troops to Afghanistan to evacuate embassy staff from Kabul.

Talking to reporters, he said that in the next 24 to 48 hours, three infantry battalions would be landed at the Kabul airport. The number of soldiers in these is 3,000.
