Teacher suspended in Karnataka wearing hijab, first-day examination of 10th board concluded without any major uproar.
Amidst the hijab controversy, the 10th board examinations began in Karnataka on Monday. A teacher who came for the examination has been suspended for refusing to remove the hijab.
Some girl students left the examination after they were refused to sit in the examination center wearing hijab.
Barring these sporadic incidents, the first day’s board exams were conducted without any major controversy.
The total number of applicants is more than eight lakhs. The board exams that started on Monday will end on April 11.
Sources said that a teacher named Noor Fatima had come to KSTV High School in Bangalore wearing a hijab for the examination. Fatima’s duty was that of the room inspector.
Fatima was sent back from the examination center for refusing to take off her hijab. She was later suspended by the Education Department.
Similarly, in Ilkal town of Bagalkot district, some Muslim girl students refused to take the exam after they were stopped from wearing the hijab.
In the Hubli district, a girl student had come to take the exam without wearing a dress and wearing a hijab and burqa.
She was asked to return as she was not dressed, but was later allowed to appear in the examination after she removed the hijab and burqa.
However, most Muslim girl students preferred the exam over the hijab.
These students said that it is more important for them to appear in the examination than to sit in the examination center wearing a hijab.
The Government of Karnataka has made school dress compulsory for the examinees. State Home Minister Araga Gyanendra has clearly said that action will be taken against those who violate the rules.
Everyone has to abide by the decision of the High Court. Wearing a hijab will not be allowed to take the exam.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister BC Nagesh has also said the same thing.
He has also expressed confidence that the students will follow the rules and focus on the examination without getting into any controversy.
Due to the corona epidemic, the examinations are being conducted after two years. There was enthusiasm among the students regarding this.
