The Issue Of Banning Children From Wearing Hijab

The issue of banning children from wearing hijab in colleges of Karnataka heats up again.

Popular Front of India’s state general secretary, Nasir Pasha alleged that colleges here are creating unnecessary controversy over the issue of the hijab which also violates the religious freedom of Muslims.

Popular Front of India’s Karnataka state general secretary Nasir Pasha issued a statement regarding the prevailing hijab controversies in various colleges in the state.

He said that some colleges are creating unwarranted controversy over the subject of headscarves and violating the fundamental, religious freedom of Muslims.

The issue of banning children from wearing hijab: Accused of barring students from entering classes.

Nasir Pasha alleged that 6 students from the Muslim community were denied admission in classes at the Government PU College in Udupi and were forced to sit outside because they were wearing scarves.

He also alleged that some students of Pompeii College in Mangaluru’s Eikla came to the college wearing saffron shawls and demanded a ban on headscarves.

Pasha said a similar controversy was fabricated at the Government First Class College, Koppa, Chikmagalur.

The dress code is applicable only till SSLC.

Pasha further added that in fact, dress codes are essentially enforced only up to SSLC.

When there is no such mandatory dress code in PU or degree colleges, to say that headscarf is not allowed is a false argument.

Pasha said that it is also a highly unfair step by the college principal to deny admission to the classes by the students wearing headscarves.

Students following the current policy on clothing.

Pasha said that especially, college students from Muslim communities are attending classes following the existing policy on clothing at the college level.

Girl students have complete freedom to make decisions, wear modest clothes of their choice. He said that it is impossible to bring equality through the clothes we wear.

Pasha said that instead of creating controversy over the headscarf due to internal bias, the need of the hour is to discuss providing value-based, quality education.
