The United Kingdom, Canada, and Germany, along with several other countries, have strongly criticised Israel’s decision to approve the creation of 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, calling the action a threat to regional stability and a breach of international law.

In a joint diplomatic statement, the countries said the decision undermines efforts to achieve a negotiated peace between Israelis and Palestinians and further weakens the prospects of a two-state solution.

The statement was issued by 14 countries, including France, Italy, Spain, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Japan, Iceland, and Malta, in addition to the UK, Canada, and Germany. The countries reiterated their long-standing opposition to Israeli settlement activity in territories occupied since 1967.

International Law Concerns: Israel’s New West Bank Settlements Draw Condemnation

The signatories stated that settlement expansion in the West Bank has “no legal validity” under international law and contradicts United Nations resolutions, including UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which urged Israel to stop establishing settlements in Palestinian areas under occupation

“We call on Israel to reverse this decision and to cease the expansion of settlements,” the statement said, adding that unilateral actions risk escalating tensions and further destabilising the region.

The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is widely regarded by the international community as occupied territory, and settlement construction there has long been one of the most contentious issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israel Rejects Criticism

Israeli officials rejected the criticism, defending the decision as a matter of national security and internal governance. Israel maintains that the settlements are legal and disputes the international interpretation of the status of the West Bank.

Senior members of Israel’s government have previously argued that settlement expansion strengthens Israel’s security presence and reflects historical and political claims to the territory.

Impact on Peace Efforts: Israel’s New West Bank Settlements Draw Condemnation

Diplomats and analysts warn that the approval of new settlements could further complicate already stalled peace efforts. Settlement expansion is widely seen as a major obstacle to restarting meaningful negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian leadership.

The joint statement reaffirmed support for a negotiated two-state solution, under which Israel and a future Palestinian state would coexist peacefully within secure and internationally recognised borders.

The countries also expressed concern that continued settlement growth fragments Palestinian territory, making the establishment of a viable Palestinian state increasingly difficult.

Broader International Reaction

Human rights organisations and Palestinian officials also criticised the move, arguing that settlement expansion leads to land confiscation, displacement of Palestinian communities, and restrictions on movement.

While many Western nations and international bodies oppose settlement construction, global responses remain divided, with some countries choosing not to comment or expressing support for Israel’s position.

Ongoing Tensions: Israel’s New West Bank Settlements Draw Condemnation

The condemnation comes at a time of heightened sensitivity in the Middle East, with diplomatic efforts focused on maintaining regional stability and preventing further escalation of violence.

Observers say the latest developments are likely to intensify diplomatic pressure on Israel and keep settlement policy at the centre of international discussions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
