Defence Minister: India to become self-reliant in defence sector; 101 devices to be built in the country. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has made several big announcements to promote self-reliant India. The Ministry of Defence has prepared a list of more than 101 items, whose import will be banned. This list also includes some high-tech weapon systems. The ban on imports is planned to be implemented gradually between 2020 and 2024.
The Defense Minister said that this list, designed to boost domestic production in the defense sector, has been prepared after discussions with the army, public and private industry. He said that these 101 items include not only handy items but also some high-tech weapon systems such as artillery guns, assault rifles, transport aircraft, LCHs, radars, and many other items to meet the needs of our defense services. According to Rajnath Singh, the three armies gave contracts worth around Rs 3.5 lakh crore between April 2015 and August 2020 for around 260 schemes for such products. In the next 6 to 7 years, an order of about Rs 4 lakh crore will be placed in the domestic industry. He said that this decision will provide an opportunity for the Indian defense industry to fulfill the requirements of the armed forces by using its own design and development capabilities.
