The army chief said that this crisis has also explained the importance of global and regional cooperation in dealing with any situation like a pandemic.
Naravane said this on the sidelines of the inauguration of a trans-national, multi-agency exercise PANAX-21 (PANEX-21) held in Pune from December 20 to 22.
The objective of this program is to promote jointness and develop capacities in disaster management aspects for BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal First for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries.
Apart from India, the BIMSTEC regional organization includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
The Army Chief said the truth is that the pandemic is not over yet and the new variant has made the exercise more realistic.
He said that the spread of the Corona pandemic across the globe has taught many lessons to everyone regarding preventive control, mitigation strategies, and protocols.
He said, ‘We have all seen the huge disaster caused by the corona epidemic since the end of 2019, still its devastation continues in many countries.’
General Naravane said that India has already faced its ill effects during the second wave of the pandemic in April-May this year.
We have lost many lives during that time. He said that the corona pandemic has really held the world community together to tackle and mitigate the challenges. Vaccination is a big step in this campaign.
Discussions underway on an international agreement on pandemic: Swaminathan.
Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Panex-21 program said that after the corona epidemic, discussions have started on the need for an international agreement to deal with future epidemics at the global level.
Some time back, a special session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) was held to discuss and prepare its draft.
