General Rawat’s Helicopter Collided With A Rock In Dense Clouds

General Rawat’s helicopter collided with a rock in dense clouds, detailed information will be given to the Defense Minister today.

The Tri-Services Investigation Team is headed by Air Marshal Manvendra Singh, which is probing the cause of the helicopter crash of Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat.

The Team will make a detailed presentation to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday.

According to sources, the CDS helicopter collided with a rock in the thick clouds. General Rawat’s wife and 12 other army personnel also died in this accident.

Giving details of the accident, defense sources said that the Mi-17V5 helicopter was flying keeping an eye on the railway line over the mountains when it suddenly entered the thick clouds.

He was flying at a very low altitude and on knowing the terrain, it is revealed that the crew had decided to cross the clouds rather than land and in the process collided with a cliff.

Since all crew members were in the ‘Master Green’ category, it appears that they were confident that they would escape the situation as they did not report the emergency to the ground stations.

The ‘master green’ category is given to the best pilots in the transport aircraft and helicopter fleets of the three services as they are pilots who can land or take off even in low visibility, he said.

Sources said the Tri-Services investigation team has also recommended certain amendments in the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for helicopters carrying senior military officers.

Among them is a recommendation that in the future the crew members should be a mix of ‘master green’ and other categories of pilots so that they can seek help from ground stations if needed.
