During the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar launched a strong critique of the global body’s inefficiency in addressing terrorism and protecting the interests of the Global South. Speaking at the event, Jaishankar questioned the United Nations’ moral authority, stating that the organization’s failure to hold perpetrators accountable has eroded the credibility of multilateralism.
He remarked, “No example better illustrates the challenges facing the United Nations than its response to terrorism. When a current member of the Security Council openly defends the very organizations that claim responsibility for barbaric attacks like the one in Pahalgam, what message does it send about the UN’s credibility?”

Without directly naming Pakistan, Jaishankar’s remarks clearly referred to Islamabad’s support for terrorist groups operating across the border. The minister condemned the hypocrisy of global institutions that remain silent while certain member states provide safe havens and political cover for terrorists.
He questioned the world’s double standards: “How much more cynical can we become if, in the name of a global strategy, victims and perpetrators of terrorism are treated the same? When terrorists are shielded from sanctions, can we still speak of sincerity in the global fight against terror?”
His comments struck a chord at the global level, as several nations have recently expressed frustration over the UN Security Council’s inaction on terrorism-related issues, especially when veto powers are involved.
Pahalgam Attack: The Trigger for India’s Response
Jaishankar’s speech followed the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, in which Pakistan-backed militants killed 26 tourists, including 25 Indian citizens and a Nepali national. The attack, widely condemned by global leaders, reignited the debate over cross-border terrorism and Pakistan’s continued support for extremist groups.
In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, a series of precision strikes targeting terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). According to official sources, India successfully neutralized multiple terror bases and repelled Pakistan’s subsequent military provocations.
The operation underscored India’s growing commitment to combating terrorism directly and demonstrated its zero-tolerance policy against cross-border aggression.
Jaishankar Slams Pakistan at UN: Testing the UN’s Credibility
Broadening his focus beyond terrorism, Jaishankar also addressed the UN’s waning credibility in the development and humanitarian sectors. He argued that if the global body fails to maintain peace and security, its role in fostering socio-economic progress becomes even more questionable.
“If maintaining peace and security remains a mere lip service,” he said, “then the situation for global development and socio-economic progress is even more dire.”
He emphasized that the UN’s credibility is being tested not only on security matters but also on its ability to adapt to the realities of a changing world — especially the needs of developing nations struggling with economic instability, climate change, and regional conflicts.
Renewed Faith in Multilateralism
Despite his strong criticism, Jaishankar ended his address on a note of optimism and resilience. He reaffirmed India’s belief in multilateralism and international cooperation, saying, “On this remarkable anniversary, we cannot lose hope. The commitment to multilateralism must remain strong. The United Nations must be supported, even in this time of crisis. Our faith in international cooperation must not only be reiterated but renewed.”
