The situation worsened after the death of a person from the Hmar community
51-year-old Lalropui Pakhuangte of the Hmar community died after being shot in the clashes that took place in the district on Tuesday night. He was taken to Silmat Christian Hospital, where he was declared dead. Hmar Inpui general secretary Richard Hmar was attacked by people of the Zomi community on Sunday.

This led to violence and curfew was imposed the next day. Meanwhile, many displaced people of the Kuki community living in relief camps were sent to safer places. Churachandpur town is mainly inhabited by people of the Zomi community, while people of the Hmar and Kuki communities are also settled in some areas.
Several MLAs and tribal organizations appealed for peace a few hours after the student organization called for a bandh in the district on Wednesday.
Manipur ethnic clashes: Called for peace among communities
In a joint statement, at least 12 Kuki-Zomi and Hmar organizations active in Churachandpur district have called for peace among the communities and agreed to form a joint peace committee to monitor the situation and prevent future misunderstandings.
Six MLAs from Churachandpur and Pherzawal districts also jointly appealed for peace and harmony, urging the administration to take necessary steps to restore law and order. More than 250 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur since May 2023.
Manipur was placed under the president’s rule on February 13
The Centre imposed President’s rule in Manipur on February 13 after N Biren Singh resigned from the post of Chief Minister and the state assembly was suspended. The term of the assembly was till 2027.
