Medical Students Should Not Work For More Than Eight Hours

Medical students should not work for more than eight hours, Madras High Court directive.

The Madras High Court has directed the medical college administration not to make postgraduate and internship students on duty for more than eight hours.

These students are put on duty for the treatment of patients in the medical college hospital.

Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice PD Adikesadavalu gave this direction while disposing of public interest litigation filed by Dr. GR Rabindranath, General Secretary, Doctors Association for Social Equality.

The petition had challenged the notification issued by the Directorate of Medical Education in July 2015.

The notification requires post-graduate students and students pursuing undergraduate internships to work for eight hours each in shifts in government hospitals and medical college hospitals.

Advocate P Muthukumar, appearing in the court on behalf of the government, said, it is true that more than eight hours of services were taken from doctors during the Corona period, but this is not always the case.

Under normal circumstances, a time limit of eight hours is taken care of.

The bench, satisfied with the reply of the public prosecutor, said, “There can be a violation of notification in emergency situations but it should not happen normally.”

The bench said, the hospitals where this is happening due to a shortage of staff, attention should be given to it. Whether the work is being done as per the notification, it should be reviewed from time to time.
