Major Dhyanchand hockey achievements
Major Dhyanchand, India’s greatest hockey player, won three Olympic gold medals. At the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936, Dhyanchand was appointed as the captain of the Indian hockey team. Dhyanchand had scored more than 400 international goals in his international career from 1926 to 1948.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honor, in the year 1956 by the Government of India. For a long time, there have been many demands at various levels for the award of Bharat Ratna to Major Dhyanchand, but the indifference the central governments have shown towards giving him Bharat Ratna is very unfortunate.
The question arises that is it fair to ignore Major Dhyanchand, who made India proud in the world by winning Olympic gold medals in the years 1928, 1932, and 1936, for the Bharat Ratna. There is restlessness among hockey supporters and sports lovers whether the hockey magician will be awarded the highest honor Bharat Ratna or not.
Now it has become completely clear that governments have been seeing their political profit and loss in the decision to give Bharat Ratna for years. It is nothing but joking with Major Dhyanchand that the then Manmohan Singh government in 2011 rejected the demand of 82 members of Parliament who recommended Dhyanchand’s name for Bharat Ratna.
