The death toll on Monday stood at one while several people were reported missing after houses were washed away due to torrential rains.

Flood warnings were issued for parts of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Vermont, with states in the region witnessing rapid rainfall and flash flooding.

Mike Cannon of Vermont Urban Search and Rescue said crews from North Carolina, Michigan and Connecticut were among those helping to reach towns that remain inaccessible after torrential rains hit the state.

Among the worst affected places was New York’s Hudson Valley, where a woman died while trying to escape her flooded home in the village of Fort Montgomery.

Five rapids rescue teams and one high-axle vehicle have been deployed by the state to assist with rescues in flood-affected areas.
