Preparation To Reduce Import Of Textile Items From China

Preparation to reduce import of textile items from China, import duty may increase. The government may soon decide to ban textile items coming from China. At present, an increase in the duty of textile items imported from China is expected.

Later, imports of these items may be prohibited altogether. According to the entrepreneurs associated with the textile industry, the less the import of textile items from China, the more the production of that item will start domestically.

According to the Commerce Ministry data, India imported $ 4 billion worth of textile items from China during FY 2018-19. During this period, India imported $ 46 million synthetic yarn from China and $ 360 million synthetic fabric.

During this period, $ 140 million of products such as jeepers, buttons, and hangers were imported from China, which is used to make ready-made garments. In FY 2018-19, India also imported apparel worth $ 197 million from China.

India also imports about 750–800 crore rupees of silk every year from China. Sanjay Jain, former president of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industries (Citi), said that all items coming from China have the potential to be manufactured domestically.

China is dumping polyester items in India. According to the entrepreneurs, due to the easy availability of man-made fabric and yarn from China, its production is reduced domestically.

Garment exporters reported that imports from China of items such as zippers, buttons, could be completely stopped, only the quality of these items made domestically would have to be improved. In this work, the government can help entrepreneurs by giving a discount on the import of the best machine so that they can make the products of the competition of China.

President of the Cloth Manufacturing Association of India (CMIE) Rahul Mehta said that he has also demanded the government to ban apparel imports coming from Bangladesh.

He says that China is sending its apparel to India via Bangladesh and domestic garment manufacturers are unable to compete with them due to the cheap prices.

Garment manufacturers say that because of the agreement with Bangladesh, India cannot ban the garment coming from Bangladesh, but India can put a condition before Bangladesh that only the fabric made in Bangladesh is imported into India.

Preparation to reduce the import of textile items by govt is imminent, according to Mehta, doing so will stop the arrival of Chinese goods through Bangladesh.
