Sudan Coup: Coup Feared In Sudan, Officials Detained

Sudan Coup: coup feared in Sudan, ministers and government officials detained.

The country is heading for a coup amid weeks of tension between the military and the civilian government.

Sudan’s military has arrested most of the cabinet members and a large number of pro-government party leaders, according to Reuters.

The Sudanese Professionals Association, the country’s main pro-democracy group, has called on people to take to the streets to counter the military coup.

The group has said that internet and phone signals are not working in the country.

Monday’s arrest comes after weeks of escalating tensions between Sudan’s civilian and military leaders. In the recent past, both the camps have been protesting heavily on the streets.

The coup attempt failed in September and fueled extremely conservative Islamists who want a military government against those who ousted autocratic former ruler Omar al-Bashir after widespread protests.

Officials on condition of anonymity confirmed the arrests of five government figures.

Officials said the detained government members included Industry Minister Ibrahim al-Sheikh, Information Minister Hamza Baloul.

Also the members of the country’s ruling transitional body Mohamed al-Fiqi Suleiman and Faisal Mohamed Saleh, media adviser to Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok.
