Supreme Court Reprimands Delhi Police in Hate Speech Case, Asks Officers to Report Investigation.

The Supreme Court on Friday requested reports from officers investigating the case in which Delhi police made “clear progress” in investigating incidents of hate speech in the capital’s religious communities in 2021.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Chief Justice PS Narasimha said: “There has been no clear progress in the investigation.”

The bench subsequently requested that Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj submit an affidavit within two weeks from the Delhi Police Investigator (IO) detailing the progress made so far in the investigation.

The high court is hearing a contempt petition filed by activist Tushar Gandhi accusing Uttarakhand and Delhi police of inaction in alleged hate speech cases.

On 11 November last year, the bench exempted the Uttarakhand government and the police chief from the list of parties to the contempt petition.

A contempt motion has been filed to punish Delhi and Uttarakhand police chiefs for alleged inaction in cases of violation of Supreme Court rulings in the Tehseen Poonawalla case.

The Supreme Court has established guidelines for what to do for hate crimes, including mass hanging. demanding action of contempt.

In his plea, the activist filed a lawsuit against senior police officials for failing to act on the matter in accordance with regulatory guidelines to prevent hate speech and hanging.

Gandhi asked the police to charge contempt for inaction following incidents of hate speech.

The petition says speeches were released shortly after the incident, but Uttarakhand Police and Delhi Police have yet to take action against the perpetrators.

The petition alleges that hate speech was given during the ‘Dharam Sansad’ held in Haridwar from December 17 to 19, 2021, and in Delhi on December 19, 2021.
