ULFA-I announced in a statement on Saturday night that it has refrained from calling off or boycotting this year’s Republic Day celebrations in view of the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

In a three-page statement in the Assamese language, the militant outfit criticized the government for the continuation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in various northeastern states and the killing of 14 people in Nagaland by security forces on December 4 and 5.

The Assam chief minister had earlier appealed to the ULFA-I not to call for a bandh on Republic Day and said he has requested the central government to expedite peace talks with the outfit.

On May 10 last year after Sarma took over as chief minister, Paresh Barua had urged him to come forward for peace talks and put an end to the 42-year-old insurgency.

The Assam Chief Minister had earlier said that he (by Union Home Minister Amit Shah) has been given the full responsibility of initiating preliminary talks with the ULFA-I.

At present, backchannel talks are going on between the Assam government and ULFA-I.
