Hindu Puranas: These are the 18 Puranas of the Hindu religion, in which the principles of life are described. The Puranas tell us about the nature of God and the principles of life through His pastimes. There is mention of Kul Puranas in the Hindu religion. This Purana is not limited to only the stories of Gods and Goddesses but also includes astronomy, medicine, history, and many other subjects.

These are 18 Puranas –

1. Brahma Purana – Brahma Purana is one of the most ancient Puranas. It mainly describes the creation of the universe. Along with this, it is written about Manuvansh, Gods and Goddesses, creatures, earth, world, hell, heaven, temples, pilgrimages, etc.

2. Padma Purana – Padma Purana describes the origin of the universe i.e. how Lord Brahma created the universe. Along with this, this Purana is also full of other types of knowledge.

3. Vishnu Purana – Vishnu Purana, included in 18 Puranas, mainly contains stories related to Lord Vishnu. This Purana composed by Sage Parashar is the shortest among the other 17 Puranas. Apart from this, the incarnations of Shri Hari, Shri Krishna’s character, and Ram Katha are also mentioned in it.

4. Shiv Purana – A description of Lord Shiva’s incarnation and his glory is found in Shiv Purana. In this Purana, various forms, incarnations, Jyotirlingas, etc. of Lord Shiva have been described.

5. Bhagwat Purana – The complete story of all the incarnations of Lord Vishnu is found in this Purana. Along with this, Bhakti Yoga has also been described in detail in this Purana.

6. Narad Puran – Narad Puran is also called Mahapuran because the essence of all the 18 Purans is given in it. Education, Kalpa, grammar, astrology, etc. have been described in Narad Purana.

7. Markandeya Purana – Markandeya Purana is considered to be the oldest Purana. It mentions all the Vedic gods including Indra, Agni, and Surya, among others. Along with this, stories related to Shri Krishna are also mentioned in it.

8. Agni Purana – The speaker of this Purana is Agni and the listener is Vashishtha. In this Purana, there is a description of incarnations of Vishnu including Shivalinga, Durga, Ganesha, Surya, Pran Pratishtha, etc. Along with this, geography, mathematics, astrology, marriage, death, divination, architecture, ethics, warfare, religion, verses, poetry, grammar, and Ayurveda have also been described in detail in this Purana.

9. Bhavishya Purana – As the name suggests. Many predictions have been made in this Purana. Along with this, there is also mention of 12 months of construction. Besides, the stories of Vikram Betal and Betal are also a part of this Purana.

10. Brahmavaivarta Purana – Brahmavaivarta Purana is considered to be the tenth Purana of the Vedas. Information related to Ayurveda is also mentioned in this. Besides, the Leelas of Lord Shri Krishna, Golok Leela of Shri Radha Rani, etc. have also been described in it.

11. Linga Purana – Description of Linga is found in Shri Linga Mahapuran. In this, a complete description of the 28 incarnations of Lord Shiva is given. Besides, the story of Andhakasura and Jalandhar slaughter is also found in this Purana.

12. Varaha Purana – Varaha Purana is a scripture based on the Varaha incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In this, the story of the incarnation of God in the form of Varaha and the subsequent re-creation of the world has also been explained.

13. Skanda Purana – Skanda Purana is based on Kartikeya, the elder son of Lord Shiva. Along with this, stories like the glorification of Lord Shava, the character of Sati, the marriage of Shiva-Parvati, the birth of Kartikeya, the killing of Tarakasura, etc. are also described in Skanda Purana.

14. Vamana Purana – Vamana Purana is mainly based on the Vamana incarnation of Shri Hari Vishnu. Along with this, there is mention of Vaman incarnation, Shivalinga worship, Ganesh, Skanda story, and the story of Shiva-Parvati in this Purana.

15. Kurma Purana – The complete essence of the four Vedas is found in this Purana. At the request of the gods, Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma to keep Mandara Chalgiri stable in the ocean during churning. It contains a description of his teachings given in that incarnation. There is also mention of the origin of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Earth, and Ganga. Kurma Purana also provides information about the four Ashrama Dharmas of human life.

16. Matsya Purana – Matsya Purana is related to the fish incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In this, a list of kings from Flood to Kaliyuga is given. Shri Hari Vishnu says that listening to this Purana increases a person’s fame. Age also increases. Apart from this, man becomes free from all sins and gets absorbed in Shri Narayana.

17. Garuda Purana – Garuda Purana deals with events related to death. In this, things related to a person’s birth, death, rebirth, sins and virtues, karma, soul, etc. are explained.

18. Brahmanda Purana – Brahmanda Purana, one of the eighteen Puranas, describes how the universe and creation were created. Along with this, it also tells about the cooperation of Gods and Goddesses in the process of construction.
