The controversy over the web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ released on Netflix last week is increasing. This web series has brought the hijack of an Indian Airlines plane by terrorists in 1999 back into the discussion. The debate is getting intense about the people involved in this plane hijack, especially the involvement of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. Gopalaswami Parthasarathy, who was India’s High Commissioner to Pakistan in 1999, said that Pakistan was fully involved in this plane hijack. Pakistan was fully involved in IC 814 Kandahar Hijack
In an exclusive interview with a leading Media House, Parthasarathy spoke about the involvement of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the incident, and Islamabad’s response, among other things. He said the reality is that al-Qaeda did not have a good relationship with Pakistan to be able to carry out the plane hijack. The Netflix series has been criticized for giving a clean chit to the ISI and linking the hijackers to Afghanistan and the al-Qaeda terror group. Parthasarathy said some people were operating from Afghanistan, adding that “the Taliban at that time was an extension of the ISI.”

When asked about the Pakistan government’s response to the crisis, Parthasarathy described it in one word – deceitful. He said, “We were told they would do the right thing and then they didn’t do it.” A few days after the plane hijack, I wanted to send my officer to Kandahar, but the Pakistan government played all kinds of games. The Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Delhi was diverted to several places including Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai, finally landing in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Parthasarathy said, “I was ready to go when the kidnapped plane came to Lahore… They delayed my flight from Islamabad to Lahore. I was given a helicopter and when the helicopter was halfway to Lahore, they told me that the plane had taken off.”
ISI is fully responsible
The former diplomat spoke very clearly about Pakistan’s role in the plane hijack. He said without mincing words that the hijackers had very close ties with the ISI, they cooperated during the hijacking. When asked if there were any lapses or mistakes in handling the crisis by the Indian government, Parthasarathy said that it was difficult to say that there was any mistake, as the hijackers were armed and there were Indian passengers inside the plane. It would have been irresponsible to try to do anything militarily at that time. We were not willing to take risks with our people.
