Indian-American citizens will continue to support the Democratic Party in the US presidential election, but their attachment to the party has decreased compared to earlier. This information has come to the fore in a survey conducted by the Indian American Attitude Survey (IAAS) to know the attitude of Indians in the election.
According to the survey, 61 percent of the registered Indian American voters support the Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris. At the same time, about 32 percent of the Indian-Americans want to vote for Republican candidate Donald Trump.
US Presidential Election 2024: The main points that have come out in the survey are as follows
Decrease in support for Democrats: The survey found that 47 percent of Indian Americans consider themselves supporters of the Democratic Party. However, this figure was 56 percent in the 2020 election, so it has decreased. At the same time, there has not been much change in the number of Republican supporters. The percentage of independent people has increased compared to the 2020 election.
2-6 Indian Americans want to vote for Harris: According to the survey, 61 percent of registered Indian American voters are planning to vote for Kamala Harris. At the same time, 32 percent of people intend to vote for former President Trump. The survey states that there has been a slight change in the priorities of the Indian-American community. The number of people willing to vote for Trump has increased since the last election.
Trump’s popularity is increasing: The survey also revealed that voters are divided between the two candidates in terms of gender. While most Indian American women support Harris, Trump’s popularity is higher among Indian American men, especially among the young population. According to the survey, 67 percent of Indian American women wish to vote for Harris, while 53 percent of men, which is a very small share, say that they plan to vote for Harris.
Abortion is a major policy issue
Abortion and reproductive rights are very important issues for Indian Americans in this election year, which is their second most important policy concern after inflation/prices. Democrats and women are particularly motivated by the issue of abortion in this election.
It is worth noting that with 5.2 million people, Indian Americans are now the second largest immigrant group in the United States.
