Army and police engaged in eliminating terrorists; Extensive campaign being run in Jammu. The police, along with the army, have launched about two dozen operations in the last fortnight to eliminate terrorists in the border and mountainous areas of the Jammu division, which is becoming the new stronghold of terrorists in the state.
With the basic mantra of search and kill, drones and sniffer dogs are also being used in these operations being run in Rajouri-Poonch, Doda-Kishtwar, Reasi, and upper areas of Udhampur and Kathua. The help of the army’s para commando squad is also being taken.
Search and Kill: Terrorist activities have increased in Jammu
It is worth mentioning that terrorist activities have increased in the Jammu division during the last few years. Terrorists have carried out many sensational attacks on security forces in Rajouri-Poonch, Doda-Kishtwar, Reasi, and upper areas of Udhampur and Kathua.
The terrorists have adopted the strategy of attacking the security forces and then running away and disappearing in the jungle like fully trained commandos in guerrilla warfare. These terrorists are equipped with ultra-modern weapons including an M4 carbine and ultra-modern communication equipment.
21 security personnel have been martyred in various terrorist attacks in the upper areas of Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Ramban, Kathua, Kishtwar, and Udhampur in the last year and 16 terrorists have been killed during this period. Last year, terrorists also killed nine devotees in Reasi.
Although the police and other security agencies are silent about the number of active terrorists in the Jammu division, based on various sources, their number is said to be up to 45-50 and about 30 of these terrorists are active in Rajouri-Poonch-Reasi-Mahor.
The other 15-20 terrorists are said to be active in Kathua, Udhampur, Doda and Kishtwar and all of them are foreigners. Last year, terrorists also killed three members of the Gram Raksha Samuh in Doda.
47 security personnel were martyred in Rajouri-Poonch in the last 4 years
Apart from Rajouri-Poonch, Reasi, Doda, and Kishtwar, the upper areas of Udhampur and Kathua were almost terrorism free before 2019. After this, terrorists gradually increased their activities in these areas.
In Rajouri-Poonch, 47 security personnel have been martyred and 48 terrorists have been killed during the last four years. Five army personnel were martyred in a terrorist attack in the upper area of Billawar in Kathua. Seven security personnel have been martyred in Doda.
Operations are being conducted in these areas
The concerned officials said that anti-terrorist operations have been happening in Rajouri-Poonch, Ramban, Reasi, Doda, Udhampur, Kathua, and Kishtwar for the last fortnight. Security forces are searching all these areas’ natural caves, rivulets, and forests.
Apart from this, the dhoks vacated by the Gujjar-Bakarwal community during winters are also being searched. In these areas, the old guides and overground workers of the terrorists are also being constantly monitored. He said that the security forces are continuously tightening the siege of all those areas where terrorists are suspected to be hiding.
