A member of the Islamic State terror group was convicted in April this year for beheading an American journalist after being taken, hostage.
El Shafee Elsheikh, 33, was previously a UK citizen. In April, he was found guilty by a federal jury in Alexandria.

The jury in the case said Alsheikh was part of the Islamic State, nicknamed ‘The Beatles’ in a British accent, that had beheaded American hostages in Iraq and Syria.
Born in Sudan, Alsheikh was raised in London. He is accused of being involved in a plot to kill four American hostages—James Foley, Steven Sotloff, Peter Kassig, and Kayla Mueller.
Foley and Sotloff were journalists, while Kassig was a philanthropist. They were beheaded and then the video was released.

Another member of the cell, Alexandra Cote, was sentenced to life in prison by a US judge earlier this year. Cote was arrested in Iraq by the US military.
He was convicted in September last year. The third member of the group, Mohammad Emwazi, was killed in a missile attack in Syria in 2015.
