Mujtaba, the six-year-old son of Muhammad Askari, a resident of Katshi village in Kharmang district, was diagnosed with a tumor in a hospital in Skardu.
Doctors referred Mujtaba to Rawalpindi for treatment a month ago. After which Muhammad Askari and mother Mujtaba were taken to Rawalpindi and they were treated for weeks in Benazir Bhutto Hospital.
Mujtaba died in the hospital on Thursday. The parents decided to take their child’s body to their native village Katshi via PIA flight on Friday for burial.
The scorching heat made it possible to travel 24 hours by road from Islamabad to Skardu with the body.
The dead boy’s parents and another relative confirmed their tickets on flight PK-451 from Islamabad to Skardu on Friday morning.
They brought the body to Islamabad airport at 6 am and after following the SOPs and airline rules, completed the cargo process for the body and made payment.
Ibrahim Asadi, a relative of the dead boy, told Dawn that the body was to be taken to Skardu from Islamabad along with the parents at 9 am.
He said the flight was delayed by four hours and took off from Islamabad at 1 pm.
On reaching Skardu airport at 2 pm, the parents were informed that by mistake the body was not boarded the plane and was left at Islamabad airport.
The parents were initially very saddened by this news and fainted crying. Then in anger, they started protesting against the negligence of PIA management.
This sequence continued for about three hours. After this officials of PIA, Civil Aviation Authority and other departments tried to pacify the child’s parents and relatives and accepted their mistake.
He has assured the parents to bring back the body on Saturday.
PIA officials said the company that handles cargo at the airport is responsible for not loading the body and assured the parents that action would be taken against it for negligence.
The boy’s parents and relatives raised slogans against the PIA administration.
He said that the poor family had paid a high price to transport the body through a PIA flight, but the airline committed grave negligence.
He has appealed to the government to take action against those responsible for the negligence.
PIA Plane Negligence: Yusuf Kamal, another relative of the dead boy, said that the body was not loaded on the plane deliberately.
He said Kashmir Affairs Minister and Gilgit-Baltistan Engineer Amir Muqam was scheduled to fly from Islamabad to Gilgit on Friday.
He said that the PIA flight from Islamabad to Gilgit could not operate. He said the government changed his arrangement and chose to go to Skardu and made the travelers stand by.
He said the flight was scheduled to depart from Islamabad at 9 am, but it was delayed to 1 pm to accommodate the minister, leaving the body at the airport.
