A suspected drug peddler was injured in an encounter with the police in Assam’s Morigaon district. In fact, he was trying to escape from custody.

Two months ago, the BJP-led government came to power in the state and since then 15 suspected terrorists and criminals have been killed and 24 injured in police encounters here.

The drug mafia of the Moirabari area was trying to escape from the custody of the police when he was gunned down by the police in Shagunbahi village around 1 pm on Friday.

This information was given by a top official. Earlier in Delhi, Assam-origin lawyer Arif Jwader had filed a complaint against the Assam Police with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

It said that since the time Himanta Bishwa Sharma took over, the Assam Police has conducted several encounters.

It was told by the Assam government that 12,000 kg of opium would be burnt in just two days. Police will burn the seized drugs in Diphu and Golaghat on 17th July and Nagaon and Hojai on 18th July.

The Chief Minister said that his government has adopted a policy of zero tolerance against the menace of drugs.

Responding to a question in the Vidhan Sabha, the Chief Minister said that efforts are being made in all the states of the Northeast to fight this problem unitedly.

He said that Home Minister Amit Shah has instructed him to take strict measures against drugs, cow smuggling, and human trafficking.

The state chief minister said the network has its roots in Myanmar and that some insurgent groups are involved in the supplies.

He said the government had no information about the involvement of ULFA (I) terrorists in the trade.
