No. 1 female tennis player Iga Swiatek’s 37-match winning streak ended with a straight-sets loss to Elise Cornet in the third round of Wimbledon here.
French Open champion Sviatec was defeated by France’s 37th-ranked Cornet 6-4, 6-2 in the women’s singles match.
In this match that lasted one hour and 33 minutes, Sviatec made 33 mistakes while Cornet made such mistakes only seven times.
World Number-1 Iga Sviatec out of Wimbledon: Sviatec’s unbeaten streak has been going on since February, during which they won 6 consecutive tournaments.
This is not Cornet’s first surprise result at the All England Club. She defeated Serena Williams in the fourth round of this grass-court Grand Slam tournament in 2014.
Jessica Pegula’s streak of reaching the quarter-finals of this year’s Grand Slam tournament has come to an end after losing to Petra Martic of Croatia in the third round.
Martic defeated the 28-year-old American, seeded eighth, 6-2, 7-6. Pegula reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and French Open this year.
She made it to the third round of Wimbledon for the first time.
Martic, who is ranked 80th in the rankings, has reached the fourth round of Wimbledon twice before. She will next face 17th seed Elena Rybakina for a place in the quarter-finals.
Harmony Tan, who defeated seven-time champion Serena Williams at the All England Club, also entered the fourth round. Tan defeated local player Katy Boulter 6-1, 6-1.
The unseeded Frenchman is making her All England club debut, where she will next face Amanda Anisimova in the next round. Amanda defeated French Open runner-up Coco Gauff.
Amanda won the match between two young American players 6-7, 6-2, 6-1. Australia’s Ayla Tomiyanvi finished 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova’s journey 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
