Guru Arjan Dev ji was the protector of religion and the true lover of humanity. The name of the fifth Guru of Sikhs, Arjan Dev Ji is recorded on the pages of history.

He spent his whole life in social service. In the year 1606, he was taken prisoner by the Mughal emperor Jahangir in Lahore and sentenced to death.

During the Mughal period, Akbar was a fan of Guru Arjan Dev, but after the death of Akbar, his relations soured during the reign of Jahangir.

It is said that when Shahzada Khusrau was ordered to be deported by the Mughal ruler Jahangir, Guru Arjun Dev gave him refuge. This was the reason that Jahangir had sentenced him to death.

Guru Arjun Dev endured all the tortures remembering God and died on 30 May 1606. In the last time of his life, he did this Ardas.

Know when and where was born

The immortal saga of Guru Arjun Dev Ji is still narrated in every household of Punjab. He was born on April 15, 1563, at Goindwal Sahib.

His father was Guru Ram Das, who was the fourth Guru of the Sikhs, and his mother’s name was Biwi Bhani. Guru Arjun Dev used to take interest in religious activities since childhood.

He was also very attached to spirituality and considered social service as his biggest religion and work. At the age of 16, he was married to Mata Ganga.

At the same time, in 1582, he was appointed by Ramdas, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs, as the fifth Guru in his place.

Compositions of Guru Arjun Dev

Arjun Dev also had great affection for literature. He was a great scholar of Sanskrit and local languages. He composed many Guruvani, which are compiled in the Adi Granth.

His compositions are still hummed by the people and Kirtan is done in the Gurudwara.
