Heavy floods in Godavari river, many villages submerged, a 16-year record broken: Andhra Pradesh.

Due to the severe floods in the Godavari river, the life of more than 20 lakh people in six districts of Andhra Pradesh has been badly affected.

The water level at Sir Arthur Cotton Dam at Dovaleswaram near Rajamahendravaram crossed 2.5 million cusecs on Saturday evening and is expected to rise further.

Earlier, in August 2006, the water level in the dam was so high. It is noteworthy that on August 7, 2006, the water level in the Godavari river reached 28,50,664 cusecs.

While on August 16, 1986, the water level was 35.06 lakh cusecs.

According to the State Disaster Management Authority, at least 628 villages under 44 manuals of six districts located on the banks of river Godavari are in the grip of floods.

Villages known as ‘Lanka’ have been particularly affected due to the floods. There is no hope of getting relief from the floods at the moment.

At the same time, the flood waters are expected to recede within the next few days due to the cessation of rain, especially in the upper catchment areas of Godavari in Maharashtra and Telangana.

According to officials, the water level of Sir Arthur Cotton Dam could reach 28 lakh cusecs within the next 30 to 36 hours.

Preparations are being made by the Andhra Pradesh administration according to the possible water level of 30 lakh cusecs.

Heavy floods in Godavari river: 69,746 people were rescued from flood-hit villages.

According to the data of the State Disaster Management Authority, officials have so far rescued 69,746 people from flood-affected villages and have been kept in 156 relief camps.

Two helicopters of the Indian Navy have been kept ready at Rajamahendravaram to carry out rescue and relief work if required.

Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy spoke to the district magistrates of the affected districts and directed them to remain alert for the next 24 hours.

10 teams of NDRF and SDRF engaged in the rescue operation.

10 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are engaged in rescue and relief operations.

The Chief Minister has directed the District Magistrates to provide 25 kg of rice, one kg of pulses, potatoes, onions, and edible oil to the families affected by the floods.

Rs 2,000 has also been asked to be given to each family taking shelter in relief centers.

According to preliminary estimates, crops in 3,173.58 hectares and horticulture crops in 5,928.73 hectares have been damaged due to floods.
