Huge increase in the seizure of drugs in the country, darknet, and sea routes became the most preferred means of smuggling.

Seizures of drugs have increased tremendously in the country during the last five years. Also, darknet and sea routes have emerged as the most preferred means for smuggling drugs in the country.

In this regard, NCB Director General (DG) SN Pradhan said on Tuesday that effective enforcement activity has led to an increase in the seizure of drugs in recent years.

Talking to a leading news agency, he said, ‘Smuggling of drugs has started on a large scale in India.

Drugs are coming through sea, land, and border, smuggling is also happening through the darknet, parcel courier, and cryptocurrency, so darkthan and hackathon have been arranged to get to the bottom of it.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) DG said, “The country witnessed an unprecedented increase in heroin seizures in the last five years.

Heroin seizures, which started at 2,146 kg in 2017, jumped to 7,282 kg in 2021. This shows an increase of about 300 percent. Similarly, there was an increase of 172 percent in the seizure of opium.

In 2017, 2,551 kg of opium was seized which rose to 4,386 kg by 2021.

Hemp seizures also increased by 191 percent during this period. 3,52,539 kg of ganja was seized in 2017 which increased to 6,75,631 kg in 2021.

Pradhan told these seizure figures while inaugurating the hackathon ‘Darkathan 2022’. The hackathon aims to find solutions to drug trafficking through the darknet.
