Russian forces in recent weeks have focused efforts to take full control of Ukraine’s eastern region of Donbas.

The part of Donbas had already been invaded by Russian-backed separatists before the February 24 attack, after failing to retain the capital Kyiv in the war.

“Everything will depend on whether Ukraine can strengthen its ability to defend its soil faster than Russia can,” he wrote.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had visited troops in several locations, including the southern Mykolaiv region, about 550 km (340 mi) south of Kyiv.

I spoke to my defenders – Army, Police, and National Guard.

Zelensky said in a video that appears to have been recorded on a moving train on the Telegram messaging app on Sunday that he is confident there is no doubt about our victory.

We will not give the southern region to anyone, and we will take back whatever is ours.

Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, wrote in a note that the Russian military would be able to capture Svyarodonetsk in the coming weeks.
