SC Has Given Two-Three Days To Prashant Bhushan

SC has given two days’ time for Prashant Bhushan to reconsider the statement in Contempt case:  The Supreme Court held a hearing on the issue of punishment in the contempt case of a well-known lawyer Prashant Bhushan. Bhushan was requested to postpone the hearing on the sentence, arguing the filing of a review petition, which was rejected by the court.

The SC has given two-three days to Prashant Bhushan to reconsider his statement. Let me tell you that in two tweets Prashant Bhushan has been held guilty of contempt for the remarks which diminished the dignity of the judiciary. It has a provision for punishment of up to six months.

Prashant Bhushan’s lawyer Dave said in the Supreme Court that the reconsideration petition is my right. There is no obligation that I file a review petition within 24 hours. The period for filing a review petition is 30 days. To this, a bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said that the verdict of conviction will be completed only after the sentencing.

The court has told Bhushan’s lawyer that even if the sentence is pronounced, it will not be served till the reconsideration petition. But the court said that he was not willing to postpone the hearing on the sentence.

Pleaded guilty to contempt, Prashant Bhushan requested the Supreme Court to postpone the trial for the sentence. In its judgment of August 14, convicting contempt, the court said that if the public was attacked for defying the judiciary, it should be dealt with vigorously.

A bench of Justices Aran Mishra, Justice BR Gavai, and Justice Krishna Murari delivered the verdict on June 27 on two disputed tweets by Prashant Bhushan in a case of automatic cognizance. In those tweets, Bhushan commented on the bike photo of the current Chief Justice SA Bobde and in another tweet objected to the functioning of the judiciary and the last four Chief Justices.
