Serena Williams beats World No. 2 Annette Kontaveit in US Open 2022. 40-year-old Serena Williams beats World No. 2 player and reaches the third tour.

Serena Williams continued her stellar performance and entered the third round of the women’s singles tournament at the US Open tennis tournament.

While 2021 runner-up Lela Fernandez and semi-finalist Maria Sakkari crashed out of the second round.

The 40-year-old Serena, who had hinted at retiring after the US Open, defeated second seed Annette Kontaveit 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 in the second round.

It was decided that she would play at least one more match for now.

In women’s singles, seeded players continued to drop out.

The previous two champions Naomi Osaka and Emma Radukanu have already been eliminated and now Fernandez and Sakkari have also been added to the list.

Sakkari was beaten 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 by Wang Xiu of China in the second round, while 14th seed Fernandez, who lost to Radukanu in the final a year ago, was beaten 6-3, 7-6 (3) by Lyudmila Samsonova.

Twelfth seed Coco Gough and 20th seed Madison Keys, however, did not have any trouble moving ahead. Both the players of America will face each other in the third round.

Gough defeated Elena Gabriela Russe 6-2, 7-6, while Keys, the 2017 US Open runner-up, defeated Camille Giorgi 6-4, 5-7, 7-6.

In the men’s section, three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray made a comeback after losing the first set to beat American Emilio Nava 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.

His next match will now be against 13th seed Matteo Berrettini. In another match, Nick Kyrgios defeated Benjamin Bonzi of France 7-6(3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

In women’s singles, Ons Jabber won 7-5, 6-2 over Elizabeth Mandlik, daughter of 1985 champion Hana Mandlikova.

She will now take on American number 31 Shelby Rogers, who defeated Victoria Kuzmova 7-5, 6-1.
