The Number Of Women Judges In The SC Increased To Four

The number of women judges in the Supreme Court increased to four, Justice Nagaratna in line to become CJI in 2027.

For the first time in the history of the Supreme Court, nine new judges took the oath of office simultaneously. During this, three women have been made judges together.

These include Justices Hima Kohli, Nagratna, and Bela M Trivedi. Justice Nagarathna may become the first woman Chief Justice of the country in September 2027.

She is the daughter of former Chief Justice of Supreme Court Justice ES Venkatramaiah.

With these three new appointments, the number of women judges in the Supreme Court has gone up to four. Justice Indira Banerjee is already a judge of the Supreme Court.

Earlier, from August 2018 to May 2020, the Supreme Court had three women judges – Justices R Banumathi, Indira Banerjee, and Indu Malhotra.

There have been eight women judges in the Supreme Court since it came into existence on January 26, 1950.

The seven other women judges appointed to the top court include Justices Sujata V Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Mishra, Ranjana P Desai, R Banumathi, Indu Malhotra, and Indira Banerjee.

Justice Hima Kohli was the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court before being appointed as a judge of the apex court.

Born on September 2, 1959, in Delhi, Justice Kohli did his LLB from Delhi University.

From 1999-2004 she was the Standing Counsel and Legal Adviser of the New Delhi Municipal Council in the Delhi High Court.

She was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on May 29, 2006, and took oath as a permanent judge on August 29, 2007.

Justice Nagarathna, who is the daughter of former CJI Justice ES Venkatramaiah. Before being elevated to the top court, she was a judge of the Karnataka High Court.

She is at the forefront of becoming CJI in September 2027.

Justice Nagarathna was appointed as an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court in February 2008 and was later appointed as a permanent judge there.

At the same time, Justice Bela M Trivedi, before being elevated to the Supreme Court, was a judge of the Gujarat High Court and belonged to the Judicial Service category.

Let us inform that with the taking of the oath of new judges, the number of judges in the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice, has increased to 33.

The sanctioned strength of judges, including the Chief Justice, in the Supreme Court, is 34.

Justices Abhay Srinivas Oka, Vikram Nath, Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Hima Kohli, and BV Nagarathna are among the nine new judges who took oath as the apex court judges.

Apart from these, Justice Ramana also administered the oath of office to CT Ravikumar, MM Sundaresh, Bela M Trivedi, and PS Narasimha.

Among the new judges, Justices Nath and Narasimha are also in line to become the Chief Justice of the country.
