13th seed Maria Sakari stole her spot in the semi-finals by beating Serena with her brilliant performance. Sakari, who defeated rising American player Coco Gough in her round match, showed her way out of the tournament by defeating 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena in a match that lasted two hours and 17 minutes.

In the final set, Maria Sakari completely dominated Serena and made it to the quarter-finals easily by 6-1.
