Western and Southern Open: Serena Williams, Maria Sakari defeated in quarter-finals. Two-time champion Serena Williams crashed out of the tournament after losing to 13th seeded player Maria Sakari. After this defeat, her journey to the quarter-finals came to an end and she could not fulfill her dream of winning the title. On Wednesday, there was a big upset in the Western and Southern tournaments.

13th seed Maria Sakari stole her spot in the semi-finals by beating Serena with her brilliant performance. Sakari, who defeated rising American player Coco Gough in her round match, showed her way out of the tournament by defeating 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena in a match that lasted two hours and 17 minutes.

The experienced Serena showed a great game in the match but failed to win. In the pre-quarter match, Serena started by winning the first set and defeated Maria Sakari 5-7. In the second set, Maria Sakari competed with a thorn and drew the match to a tie-breaker, winning 7-6. In the final set, Maria Sakari completely dominated Serena and made it to the quarter-finals easily by 6-1.

Sakari said after the victory, ‘I still don’t realize it. It is a pleasant feeling because Williams is a role model for budding players like me and everything they have achieved so far is huge. ‘ Sakari will face Britain’s number one player Johan Konta for a place in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, the world’s number one player, returned to the court after being infected by Corona. Serbia’s legendary tennis player Djokovic showed his old complexion after getting some relief from neck pain. In the Western and Southern Tennis Tournament, the unseeded American Tennes Sandgren defeated Djokovic in straight sets to reach his winning record of 20–0 (win-loss) in 2020.
